Get Your Alabama Fingerprint Clearance Card
In order to become a substitute teacher in Alabama, you are required by the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 to be fingerprinted for a criminal history background check through the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Because the process takes about 5-8 weeks, we recommend you apply for a fingerprint clearance card before submitting any other required paperwork for a substitute position.
Proof of High School Completion
Provide proof of having obtained a high school diploma or the equivalent, such as a general education diploma (GED).
Complete Your Application for Certification
In addition to your proof of High School Completion, you should download and complete an application for a substitute teacher’s license (Form SUB). Applications are available at any school district office or by download at the Alabama Department of Education Document Download Page. Complete the application form and submit it along with the $30 application fee to the Alabama State Department of Education. This fee can be submitted online or as a money order or cashier’s check.
