Ohio Substitute Teacher Requirements
To gain employment as a substitute teacher in the state of Ohio you will need to contact the school and school district you wish to work for to gain a sponsorship for licensure through the Ohio Department of Education. - A Bachelor's degree
- Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCII) and FBI background check
- Completed application and application fees
- Official Transcripts
- Letters of recommendation
Complete your Ohio BCII and FBI background check
BCII and FBI background checks are performed electronically, and you are encourage by the Ohio Department of Education to check with the school district or ESC to determine where you should go to have your background check completed.
Obtain Official College Transcripts
You'll need your original college transcripts showing you have a bachelor's degree in order to receive your substitute certificate. Submit your official transcript with your substitute teacher application.
Complete Your Application for Certification
Since you will need sponsorship from the school district you wish to work for or County Educational Service Center (ESC) in order to gain your substitute license in Ohio, the district will provide all the necessary information and applications for both the district and the application needed to apply with the Ohio Department of Education.
